Explaining Visa Secure
All Flexi Debit Visa and BNZ Visa credit cards come with an extra layer of security - Visa Secure (previously known as Verified by Visa). This is to help stop your BNZ cards being used online without your permission. The system works automatically in the background and most of the time you won’t notice it’s there.
Confirming your identity
Sometimes you’ll see a BNZ screen either within the checkout page or as a popup (like the ones below) and be asked to confirm your identity using two-step authentication in the BNZ app.
There are a number of reasons why these screens may appear, for example, if your card is being used for a large or uncharacteristic purchase or you are changing your card details.
If you notice a popup has been blocked, you may need to set your browser to allow popups from https://cardsecurity.bnz.co.nz.
What to do if the BNZ screen appears
Flexi Debit Visa cardholders
- Open the BNZ app when prompted.
- Check the transaction details, including the last four digits of your card, merchant, and amount are correct.
- Confirm that you’re using your Visa card online to make this transaction by tapping Yes, it’s me. If the transaction details aren’t what you expected, tap No, don’t allow.
Credit cardholders
- Enter the last four digits of your 9-digit access number found on the back of your BNZ card.
If completed correctly, you can return to the merchant’s website to complete your purchase or update your card details. If you can’t provide that information or confirm it’s you in the app, your purchase may be declined or you will be unable to update your card details and your card could be locked.
What to do if you don’t have the BNZ app
If you’re already set up with Internet Banking but don’t have the app, you can download the app to complete your purchase. How to set up the BNZ app

What to do if your card is locked

To unlock your card you’ll need to call us on 0800 299 699 (from within New Zealand) or +64 4 931 8394 (if you call from overseas) between 8am-8pm Monday to Friday, and 9am-6pm Saturday, Sunday and on Public Holidays. You’ll be asked questions to confirm your identity.
