PremierCare insurance changes

The information on this page doesn’t apply to PremierCare insurance policies. PremierCare insurance is no longer available for new customers.

IAG will transition existing PremierCare policies to new policies as they come up for renewal. This is expected to start after mid-2025. The new insurance policies will provide enhanced online features and functionality to manage your insurance policies. Policyholders will receive communications about their new policies before they are moved from their existing ones. If you replace or make changes to your PremierCare insurance before then, you may move to a new policy. For any queries relating to PremierCare insurance, please call the IAG team on 0800 808 618.

Home insurance cover benefits

Accidental damage

Sudden and accidental damage including damage from storms and flooding, up to the total sum insured of your home.

Replacement cover for qualifying homes

If your home is damaged by fire or an explosion, you’re covered for the repair or rebuild costs for the entire floor area, even if it ends up costing more than your home sum insured.

Natural hazards

In the event of an earthquake, landslide, volcanic activity, hydrothermal activity, or tsunami, you’ll be covered for the repair or rebuild of your home.

Glass and bathroom fixtures

This optional benefit can be added to your home insurance policy. You won’t pay any excess if you claim solely for sudden and accidental breakage of things like windows, cooktops, sinks, or shower glass.

Temporary accommodation

If your home is unliveable due to covered loss or contamination damage, you can claim up to $30,000 for a temporary place to stay for you, your family, and domestic pets.

Hidden gradual damage

You’re covered up to $3,000 a year for hidden gradual damage caused by water leaking from an internal tank or internal plumbing.

Cover for landlords

If your home has tenants, IAG has cover specifically tailored for landlords. You’ll be covered for up to $30,000 of lost rent if a covered loss or damage to your rented home makes it unliveable. You’ll also be covered for up to $10,000 in removal costs for abandoned possessions that your tenants may have left behind.

You can add optional benefits such as ‘rent default’ to cover the loss of rent if your tenants are evicted for not paying or leaving without notice.

Understanding your insurance cover

Home sums insured

Your home sum insured is the estimated amount it would cost to rebuild your home. It needs to cover materials and labour, as well as other expenses like demolition, consents, and other fees. If it’s too low, you might not be able to rebuild your home to the same size or quality, or you might have to pay for some of the building costs yourself. You should review it regularly to make sure your home sum insured stays up to date.

How premiums are calculated

Insurance premiums are regularly reviewed and calculated each year to account for any changes to costs of providing cover. This is to make sure that you pay a fair and sustainable price for your insurance. Insurance premiums are closely linked to individual factors such as where you live, the age of your home, and your home sum insured.

Earn BNZ Points to spend on rewards

If you pay your insurance premiums with a BNZ Advantage credit card, you’ll earn BNZ Points which can be redeemed for rewards such as travel, eGift cards, or cash back.
