Buying a home

Buying a house isn't something you do everyday; it's likely to be the biggest thing you ever pay for.

Housing the familyBuying a home is an exciting time, and there's a lot to think about. Before you start looking, it's important to spend time thinking about and discussing what you want in a home and where you'd like to live. Here are some tips that will help make the process go smoothly.

Decide what sort of home you want
Make a list of what you must have, what would be great to have, and what is not so important:

  • How many bedrooms do you want?
  • Do you need a garden for the kids, pets or to relax in?
  • Is parking or a garage important?
  • Do you want a do up?
  • Do you want a big place?
  • How important is sun?

Where do you want to live?

  • How close do you want to be to friends, family, shops, work, school, public transport and parks?
  • Use the newspaper, property brochures and real estate websites to get an indication of prices in the areas you are considering.

For each individual property, there are also a number of things to look for.
